Personality & Traits
General Overview
Regina is usually soft spoken, choosing most often to listen rather than talk. She is uncomfortable around large groups of people and usually tends to just set back and watch when put in such a situation. Her crew and her ship are the most important things to her, in that order. She does not take the lives of her crew lightly. In her eyes they are more important than she is, and she would give her life if she felt it would save them.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Her greatest strength is also her greatest weakness. She is a touch telepath, with the ability to gain a great deal of information from either a person or an object simply by touching it with her bare skin. However, she had never honed or used this ability the way most would so she has no control. If she is not ready for the contact, it can be a very unpleasant and debilitating experience for her.

She does not have a high sense of self esteem. She is good at hiding that fact, but deep down inside she is convinced that Starfleet screwed up when they gave her command of the Highlander. She is constantly waiting for the moment when they will call her and tell her that they are sending the Highlander a real CO.
Ambitions
Right now her only real ambition is to live up to the position she has been given.
Hobbies & Interests
She has a slight interest in history, mostly because of her 'gift'. She is also interested in martial arts and any other kind of combat, specifically close quarters.

History
Regina Melar was born on Betazed to merchants. Her mother and father were owners of a freighter that transported not only merchandise but also people through the Denoyan Nebula. While on one of their routine runs Regina came down with an illness so her parents left her with a family friend on Feloria while they made their weekly run. On their way through the nebula a shift in the gravity of a nearby star caused the state of the gasses in the nebula to be altered. This caused a chain reaction that destroyed the nebula and the freighter.

Regina was only five when this event happened, so she does not remember much from that time. The family friend, a Felorian known to all as Grizz, took her in as his own and raised her with his Pride. She learned the ways of the Felorians, but the sorrow and pity that she could read in the thoughts of others aggravated her. She did not want to be pitied, nor did she want anyone to feel sorry for her. She would tell people this, but she could never seem to escape the thoughts that the had. Finally, in frustration, she began ignoring and even suppressing the mind reading abilities that came with her species. After a time, her abilities disappeared all together. This was a relief to her and made her child hood much more bearable.

Having grown up among the Felorians, Regina was more focused on physical activity rather than mental discipline. She attended some college on Betazed, but found that she did not get along well with others of her own species. They tended to see her as 'broken'. Frustrated, she decided to attend Starfleet Academy where she was sure she would be accepted for what she was. It was during this time that her powers resurfaced. During a training exercise she touched an opponent and got a flash of what he had done the past few hours. It took a bit more time for her to realize that she had become a touch telepath.

Despite what she saw as a 'disability', she excelled in the tactical and combat fields, but did not do well with the chain of command. Still, she graduated in the top 50% of her class and was sent on to the USS Eisenhower. Not long after receiving this first assignment her issues with commanding officers came into view. She clashed with many superior officers, often going so far as to pick fights with those who belittled her. After a series of transfers and a demotion thanks to an altercation with a group of Klingons, Regina was sent to a outpost on the edge of the Neutral Zone. It was believed that out there she could not get into much trouble.

She remained at this outpost for almost six years before she was transferred to the USS Omega by request of the Omega's Captain. She was given the position of Chief of Security, but only held that position for a few months before she was promoted to XO. She proved to be a competent XO and began to actually find a place for herself. She also began an intimate relationship with the ship's doctor, which she discovered was an ex-Tal-Shiar agent who was hiding in Starfleet. The Doctor and her conceived a child together, but during a battle onboard the USS Omega Regina was injured and lost the child. Unable to deal with her own failure and not wanting to admit this failure to the Doctor she left and returned to Feloria.

Several months later she was given a new assignment aboard the USS Highlander. She refused to accept, still not able to deal with the loss of her child. Grizz, through his gruff but loving way, convinced her that the best thing she could do would be to return to the stars. Reluctantly, she did. Several months after taking the commission onboard the Highlander the Captain stepped down and she was given command.
